It was written in the stars! And he was destined to be a winner! And now the story can be told.
Did you know that Mike Manansala (a 23 year old 6 ft and 2 inches head turner-model from Pampanga and a Will Devaugn carbon copy) was just a replacement to a candidate who is withdrawing from the pageant because a family member passed away? Was his participation a stroke of fate or was Mike just being there in a right time and a right place? Or was luck or a good karma in play here?
And now more questions arise, the "what if ..." questions that makes facts turn to mystery, and people trying to answer it in quandary. What If ... Francis So and Kerwin Caballero did not withdraw from the contest, and Mike was not even a candidate (and maybe was just sleeping or partying with friends that night), who could have been the eventual winner?
Could it be the first runner up Thomas Anthony Malko, a sleepy-eyed hunk that make the audience woke up and pay attention because of his too-good-to-be-true-porma? Or could it be second runner up BB (the body beautiful) Farzan Nasirian and his ability to flex his biceps and then the judges nod too? Or would it be another darkhorse who is may not even at play here but kicks butt at the halftime and blow the jury's mind at the end?
MIP 2009 also proved that Pampanga is the winningest province there is, and is considered the beauty factory in the country. This province who was lately battered by Ondoy and Pepeng continued to make their strong presence felt and some friends even say its records is almost comparable to Venezuela in terms of its winning streaks, attitude, and solid performance. Proof of that is the long list of beauty queens from Mimilanie Marquez to Gay Balingit who has made the country proud in the contest they joined. In the male division, they are even bigger than life with the success of Reggie Curley at Bodyshots, Ralph Schwein, Jayson Colis and Eric Yanlung at Ginoong Filipinas, Rio Ferreras at Maharlikang Pilipino and the list goes on. And on.
The big question is ... will Michael Manansala continue the streak his predecessors have started at the Mr. International contest in Taiwan in November? Will his clean shaven head creates ripples or will it be a liability? Hope springs eternal. Meanwhile here's the complete list of winners.
